Modernism, 1910-1945 explores and celebrates the increase and improvement of modernist and avant-garde literatures and theories of this actual interval, from Imagism to the Apocalypse flow. 60 Adelelm, count of Arras (d. 932). 61 Ralph, king of the Franks (923–36) and Hugh the Great (d. 956), son of Robert, king of the Franks (922–23). 62 The Latin word pagus denotes an (originally Roman) administrative area in France. The Merovingian and Carolingian kings kept most of these units intact and the Church’s ecclesiastical organisation in (arch)dioceses usually corresponded with the pagi. There is no satisfactory English equivalent for the word and ‘district’ is a fairly arbitrary translation.
Of the eighty Scandinavian names identified by Adigard des Gautries in Norman sources, most are male and Danish, with only three names belonging to women. From this it appears to follow that the Scandinavian (Danish) men settled down with, or married, Frankish women. Their offspring would have been brought up by their mothers, who no doubt taught them French as their first language. With language come customs, and we can perhaps assume that the children of mixed marriages were brought up to accept the prevailing manners and customs of France, even though they would not forget their Scandinavian origin and pass on Scandinavian folklore to future generations.
57, 64–5, 68. [Dedicatory letter to Bishop Adalbero of Laon] … But I want to assure you, so that you do not think that I stuck to this task voluntarily, or that I began it of my own volition. Two years before he died, I was never away from the court of Duke Richard,33 son of William the marquis, desiring to return to him the courtesy of my service, on account of innumerable benefits, which he had seen fit to share with me, irrespective of my merits. On one particular day, Richard came up to me and began to enfold me in his arms of pious love, to influence me with the sweetest of his speeches, to persuade me with charming entreaties; he even began to denounce me and called in charity to witness, saying that if it was at all possible for me, I should relieve the long suffering of his soul: namely that I should describe the customs and deeds of the Norman Land, even of his forebear Rollo, who established law in the land.
