Many scholars have used this story as an illustration of the dichotomy between contemplation and the active life. Mary, sitting at Jesus' feet, represents the contemplative life; Martha, the doer, represents winning salvation by good works. But this is not a story placing those two priorities against each other. Writer Luke intentionally placed this journey story after the parable of the good Samaritan, where hearing the word of the Lord (Luke 10:24) meant following the example of the despised Samaritan.

Just as deeply, I resisted. There were a thousand reasons not to do it. She owed me money, after all. And what about her dignity if she found out? I knew she was struggling, but that was her business. Page 38 Bottom line, I knew she needed a lot of help, and I didn't have it to give. I wasn't down to my last meal like the widow, but I was down to my last shred of sanity. I couldn't do it. I was a lay person in the church. I wouldn't know what to say to her. I had small kids. I was already burned-out on church work.

Martha was doing the expected thing, filling out the role designated to her by her society. Mary, on the other hand, was finding her identity in a role forbidden to her. Jesus, functioning as host, offered Mary a wildly liberating option. In his hospitality, he opened the door for new possibilitiesa new way of looking at the world. When we participate in true biblical hospitality, we too offer liberation. That shakes up the status quo. That's the difference between real hospitality and our softened versions of it.
