Chapter 4 Risks of acupuncture A knowledge of the potential risks of acupuncture is obviously the most essential thing that any would-be acupuncturist must acquire. One shouldn’t exaggerate the dangers; acupuncture is generally remarkably safe if performed responsibly by someone with an adequate knowledge of anatomy. To put this in perspective, the risks in performing acupuncture are probably less than those of giving a conventional non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID).

Duration of needling This whole process takes between 10 seconds and two minutes, which is very considerably less than the 20 minutes generally used by traditional practitioners and also less than the 20–30 minutes advised by some modern acupuncturists who base their recommendation on physiological considerations. It may seem surprising that such brief needling is effective, but in practice it is, difficult though that may be to explain. One possible reason why it works is that the nervous system adapts very quickly to a new stimulus and soon ceases to register it.
